A collaboration with UK singer, Mac Austin (Whitedoor/Grace)
ADMAD:
Admad is a song written at about the same time as Nippon launched the first commercial, 1G internet network in Japan. Advertising was about to come of age. A song was born in protest.
Admad, found its way onto a release by Grace (a local band), on MCA Records, and into their setlist for live performances where audiences celebrated its message with the chant of, ‘sell, sell, sell.’ But songs come and go. Admad came and went, quietly retiring into vox pop heaven, a place it would stay for many years until the world discovered 5G, a unified interface with the same advertising muscle as a shiver of sharks.
Then in 2023 Mac and Gar, (Mac Austin and Gary Hurlstone) had a chance encounter, a brief conversation, a long overdue reconciliation; serendipity lending a hand as two old friends headed for the studio together once more. Admad, a song about commercial manipulation, was getting a makeover. This is what happened…
lyrics
Admad
The Queen of Hearts is playing out her hand.
Peak hour viewing, two-page spreads, news-stands.
Home from home like momma used to make.
With a pinch of this and that to help it bake.
And it’s shrink wrapped, fresh packed,
Free from taste or smell
In your shops and homes’, let’s make it sell, sell, sell.
And its marvel gunk to soften up your skin.
Try some of these to help you stay so thin.
I see eye to eye - gee he sees it to
The only thing we ask is - are they thinking for you?
Super Weighty then replaces pounds.
Mr Money helped fall to the ground.
The admad claims to brighten up our lives,
Just one lever to pull yet another surprise, surprise.
And it’s shrink wrapped, fresh packed, free from taste or smell,
In our shops and homes’, they make it sell, sell, sell.
It’s Marvel Gunk to soften up your skin,
Try some of these to help you stay so thin, stay so thin.
I see eye to eye Gee, he sees it to - The only thing we ask, are they thinking of you? REPEAT

anything!
In a varied and colourful career, I have also busked on the Chinese underground, been banned from playing festivals by the PRC Communist Party, sang at the opening of a Kitchen Appliance Shop and appeared second on the bill to a singing dog! All character building stuff....more
