To Lie Right Here

from How to Smile Upside Down by Gary Hurlstone

/

about

A recurring theme in my songs is the notion that we spend a lot of time looking for something in our lives that is often right next to us. Deciding to 'lie right here' is really just about waking up to this possibility. The line, 'Wave or drown' in the song is adapted from a poem by Stevie Smith, Not Waving but Drowning (1957).

The guitar is tuned C (4th only) and everything else is standard, cappo at the 2nd

lyrics

Lie Right Here

At morning song you hold me
This blushing night
It fades so slowly
On silver bark
The frost lies still

For I don’t keep a score
We’ve played this game before
So I just want to lie right here
I just want to lie right here
In your arms

Still we laugh as we
Watch the stars and sea
Wave or drown?
They seem the same to me

Let’s kiss our time or fly
In the cradle of the night
So I just want to lie right here
I just want to lie right here
In your arms

Don’t know how, don’t know why
When I feel your heart
Beating next to mine
My my - I sense your doubt
Captured in a sigh
From a spinning palette of smiles
So, I just want to lie right here
In your arms
